Wild Hogs: You Do the Math
On October 29th I attended a program on wild hog management sponsored by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Mississippi State University Extension Service.
Here’s the situation: the reproductive rate of hogs is astonishing. According to the experts, you have to kill 80% of the population annually to maintain your current numbers.
For those of you who love numbers:
Start with 1 pregnant sow:
5 years = 43 hogs
10 years = over 600
20 years = over 100,000
Think this is unrealistic? One of the presenters reported trapping 59 hogs in one night, in one trap. Over the next few nights the total for the trap reached 85.
The only known effective methods of management of the problem are hunting and trapping.
Landowners: if you have hogs, you can’t let up. If you need assistance, start with your local game warden and he can guide you to predator or nuisance control agents in your area.
